Rockville is the Montgomery County seat, which leads people to assume it has the county's vehicle services. It does not — and the one facility that carries the Rockville name is not actually in Rockville.
What Rockville drivers need to know
- The "Rockville" VEIP station is in Derwood. The MVA lists it as Rockville, but the address is 15910 Chieftain Avenue, Derwood, MD 20855 — roughly six miles north of Rockville Town Center. Searching the station by name sends people to the wrong place. Use the Chieftain Avenue address.
- There is no MVA branch in Rockville, despite it being the county seat. Montgomery County's branches are Walnut Hill and Metropolitan Grove, both in Gaithersburg, plus White Oak over in Silver Spring.
- For anyone on the I-270 corridor, Walnut Hill on South Westland Drive is usually the shorter queue of the two Gaithersburg branches.
- Montgomery County is in the VEIP programme area, so biennial emissions testing applies to Rockville-registered vehicles.
Worth knowing: Give yourself more time than the map suggests. The Derwood VEIP station and the Gaithersburg MVA branches are both off I-270, and the corridor backs up badly at rush hour in both directions.
Where Rockville residents go for the other two programmes
We perform the state safety inspection. These are the state-run facilities serving Rockville for emissions testing and for titling and registration — addresses as published by the MVA.

The safety inspection itself
The standard is identical everywhere in Maryland — it is set by the Maryland State Police, not by the county. What changes from station to station is the price, the wait and the re-inspection policy, because Maryland does not cap the fee.
- Required when a vehicle is sold, titled or transferred, or when a new resident registers an out-of-state vehicle. It is not an annual test.
- The certificate is valid 90 days from issue.
- If the vehicle fails, you have 30 days or 1,000 miles to repair and return.
- Only a station licensed by the Maryland State Police can issue the certificate — how to check.
