Germantown is one of the largest communities in Maryland without its own municipal government — and without its own MVA branch or VEIP station. Everything runs south down I-270 to Gaithersburg, which makes the 24-hour kiosk there the single most useful fact for a Germantown commuter.
What Germantown drivers need to know
- No MVA branch and no VEIP station in Germantown. Both Montgomery County MVA branches and the county's kiosk-equipped VEIP site are in Gaithersburg, about twelve minutes south on I-270.
- The Gaithersburg VEIP kiosks run 24 hours, which matters here more than almost anywhere: Germantown is a commuter town, and a station that closes at 5:00 PM is no use to someone who leaves at 6:00 AM.
- Germantown sits on the natural route between lower Montgomery County and the upper-county towns — MD 27 runs from Clarksburg and Damascus up toward Mount Airy, which is how a fair number of our customers reach us.
- Montgomery County is in the VEIP programme area, so biennial emissions testing applies to Germantown-registered vehicles.
Worth knowing: If you are heading up MD 27 toward Damascus and Mount Airy anyway, you are driving straight through our part of the world — see our Mount Airy page.

We perform the state safety inspection. These are the state-run facilities serving Germantown for emissions testing and for titling and registration — addresses as published by the MVA.

The safety inspection itself
The standard is identical everywhere in Maryland — it is set by the Maryland State Police, not by the county. What changes from station to station is the price, the wait and the re-inspection policy, because Maryland does not cap the fee.
- Required when a vehicle is sold, titled or transferred, or when a new resident registers an out-of-state vehicle. It is not an annual test.
- The certificate is valid 90 days from issue.
- If the vehicle fails, you have 30 days or 1,000 miles to repair and return.
- Only a station licensed by the Maryland State Police can issue the certificate — how to check.
