Failed Your Maryland Inspection? Here's What to Do

Don't worry — a failed inspection is common and fixable. Here are the re-inspection rules, deadlines, and fees.

If your vehicle fails its initial Maryland state safety inspection, you'll receive a detailed report listing exactly what needs attention. From there, the rules are straightforward.

The 30-day / 1,000-mile rule

You have 30 days or 1,000 miles — whichever comes first — to complete the necessary repairs and return for re-inspection of the failed items. Return within that window to the same authorized station and re-inspection is often free or discounted.

Miss the window? If you exceed 30 days or 1,000 miles, a full new inspection — and full fee — is required, not just a re-check of the failed items.

Where can I get the repairs done?

You have three options:

  • Do it yourself — your repairs still have to pass re-inspection.
  • Use the inspection station — convenient if you'd like it handled in one place.
  • Use any repair shop — take it wherever you prefer.

Whichever you choose, the re-inspection must be performed by the same inspector at the same station that did the original inspection.

How to pass the second time

Bring your failure report so the inspector can verify each item was addressed. Double-check the repaired components and review our inspection checklist to make sure nothing else slips through. For pricing on the original and re-inspection, see our inspection cost guide.
